Medica

Medica is a nonprofit health plan founded in 1975, providing health insurance coverage to more than a million members across Minnesota and neighbouring heartland states.

Medica is a nonprofit health plan serving more than a million members across the American heartland. Founded in 1975 by a group of Minneapolis doctors, the organisation has operated for nearly five decades and provides health insurance coverage in Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and beyond. Its stated model rests on personalised care experiences and close partnerships with providers, with an emphasis on coordinated, quality service and on being present in the moments that matter most to members.

As a nonprofit, Medica directs its resources back into the communities it serves rather than to shareholders. Community Giving Initiatives focus on early childhood and maternal health, food security and mental health, and the organisation describes a mission-driven approach that extends beyond traditional insurance coverage. This places clinical staff within a setting where care coordination and long-term relationships with members and providers are central to the work.

Medica expanded its regional capability in 2021 through a joint venture with SSM Health, in which it invested in Dean Health Plan. The combination of a multi-state footprint, a large membership base and a nonprofit structure shapes the environment in which nurses and other care professionals work.
